Tucked behind high walls on Rua da Carreira, the British Cemetery is one of the most serene and historically significant “cities of the dead” in Madeira. Established in 1771, it tells the story of the island’s long-standing alliance with the United Kingdom.
Before this cemetery was built, non-Catholics (mostly British merchants and sailors) were often buried at sea, as they could not be interred in consecrated Catholic ground.
The cemetery is a botanical marvel, often looking more like a private garden than a graveyard.
The cemetery reflects a unique Anglo-Portuguese aesthetic.
