RIP Madeira

The British Cemetery: A Garden of Eternal Peace in Funchal

Tucked behind high walls on Rua da Carreira, the British Cemetery is one of the most serene and historically significant “cities of the dead” in Madeira. Established in 1771, it tells the story of the island’s long-standing alliance with the United Kingdom.

A Sanctuary for the “Stranger”

Before this cemetery was built, non-Catholics (mostly British merchants and sailors) were often buried at sea, as they could not be interred in consecrated Catholic ground.

  • The Land: The land was purchased by the British Consul, making it one of the oldest British cemeteries on foreign soil.
  • The Law: At the time, the cemetery had to be hidden behind high walls to avoid “offending” the local religious sensitivities.

Notable Burials & Famous Lives

The cemetery is a botanical marvel, often looking more like a private garden than a graveyard.

  • William Gourlay: A famous Scottish physician who treated many on the island.
  • Victims of the Sea: Many headstones belong to young sailors and travellers who succumbed to “The Consumption” (Tuberculosis) after coming to Madeira for its healing air.
  • The HMS Amazon: Look for memorials dedicated to those lost in historic shipwrecks off the Madeiran coast.

Culture & Architecture

The cemetery reflects a unique Anglo-Portuguese aesthetic.

  • The Chapel: A small, dignified Anglican chapel stands on the grounds for memorial services.
  • Botanical Heritage: You’ll find rare exotic plants and massive trees that have shaded these tombs for over 200 years.
  • Language: Most headstones are in English, providing a vital genealogical record for the British Diaspora in Madeira.
